Match Preview: Netherlands and Ireland name squads for Men's international

Netherlands and Ireland men clash on Saturday 4th October as they play the second of a double header of senior internationals at 4.30pm, preceded by both nations' women at 3pm.

The men’s clash was also a narrow victory the previous time out, Ireland hanging on to win 30-28 last year.

Rick Baats and Thomas Frencken from Brabant Bears and Zwolle trio Stan Boersma, Sam Klumpert and Sylvan Vonken are possible debutants for Netherlands in a squad that will be challenging for places for their Euro B campaign later this month.

“We’re really looking forward to this game,” said Netherlands men’s head coach Dave Hunter. “They’ve had a good win against Wales, so it’ll be a massive challenge for us. But we’ll also get the opportunity to look at some new players who impressed during the domestic season. These next two matches are vital preparation for our Euro B matches against Malta and Serbia and we want to start this campaign in a positive way.”

Ireland will look to hand debuts to Kyle Barret, Oisin Carroll, Darie Kemp, Conor Mahon, Will Walker, Danny Lynch, Paul McCullagh and Warrington Wolves’ youngster Daniel Coop, while Liam O’Callaghan will captain the side, with Ryan Hogg his deputy.

Men’s head coach, Wayne Kerr, noted: “We have seven uncapped players, two of them from our U18 squad that performed very well in this year's Four Nations including the captain Daniel Coop who will be earning his full international cap, which is a testament to our pathways programme.

“We also have nine players from last year's squad which is massive for us to keep continuity in this playing group. Our objective is to put in a full 80-minute performance so we can come away with another win.”

Match Report: Ireland Men whitewash Netherlands 0-30 in Sassenheim

Stormy conditions greeted the men, Ireland grinding out a win against a Netherlands side who showed plenty of promise but ultimately lacked the firepower to breach the Wolfhounds defence. Prop Daniel Lynch crossed early for the visitors with a strong run through the middle, skipper James Farrar adding the conversion.

The pouring rain showcased both sides defensive efforts, Stephen Cahill extending the Irish lead just before the break as the ball found its way out wide, but Farrar unable to convert in the howling gale.

Ireland started the second half strongly Oliver Whitford slicing through in the opening set and Lewis Wing going over out wide ten minutes later. Whitford added his second on the hour mark, stand off Farrar with the final word, converting his own try for ten points to seal a solid personal performance.

Ireland men’s coach, Wayne Kerr, noted: “It was a great game, a proper armwrestle and a great result for us. All of our middles were awesome, but it was a really good team effort. We get back into the grind again now for Wales in November.”

“The effort was there and attitude on defence good,” said Netherlands men’s coach Dave Hunter. “It’s a good first hit out for the year, and given the coaching staff an idea of who is up for the task moving forward going into the game against Ukraine and then Euro B.”
