Ghana to host Cambridge University Rugby League tour

The Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club (CURLFC) has officially confirmed its first-ever tour of Ghana, set to take place from July 6 to July 13, 2026.

The historic tour will feature a series of competitive matches against Ghana Leopards, the President’s XIII, and the University of Ghana Rugby League Team.

In addition to the highly anticipated fixtures, the Cambridge team will also engage in developmental and community projects upon arrival, contributing to the ongoing growth of rugby league in Ghana.

CURLFC Captain Owen Hanford shared his excitement ahead of the tour:

“Both the club and I are thrilled at the prospect of our upcoming tour to Ghana in 2026. We are not only eager to test our mettle against some of the most robust rugby league outfits the continent has to offer, but also to explore the vibrant culture that the country is steeped in.

The University of Cambridge is seeking to forge a lasting relationship with the Rugby League Federation of Ghana and would be honoured to host The Leopards for a return fixture in the coming years.

The team has been preparing diligently to ensure victory against the national side. Their athleticism, physicality, and discipline pose a formidable challenge for Cambridge to overcome. The club has been training hard through the summer heat to simulate the conditions: countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears have been poured into preparation for what promises to be one of the toughest fixtures in club history. Bring it on.

Most of all, we are keen to meet players, coaches and fans alike who share our passion for the sport and are excited to expand the reach of rugby league across borders.”

Vice President of CURLFC, Tom Allen, added: “Making this a regular fixture would add another level to the experience we can provide our players at CURLFC. The opportunity to experience such an amazing part of the world and play the sport we love is the perfect way to end our season. A tournament like this would be a great next step in a lasting relationship with the Rugby League Federation of Ghana.”

Ghana captain Riddick Alibah welcomed the challenge. “Playing against a prestigious institution like Cambridge is a huge moment for us," he said.

"We respect the history and discipline they bring to the game, but we’re ready to defend our turf with pride. The boys are hungry, focused, and honoured to represent Ghana on such a global stage. This is more than a match — it’s a statement about how far the sport has come in our country.”

Marshall Nortey, Technical Director of the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG), emphasized the broader vision:

“This tour signifies more than just competition - it’s a step toward building international pathways and development opportunities for our players and coaches," he said. "We are excited to host Cambridge and showcase the energy, talent, and potential Ghana has to offer. This is the kind of partnership that strengthens the foundation of rugby league in West Africa.”

The Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) has embraced this initiative as a major milestone in its mission to grow the sport across the continent. Plans are already underway to ensure the tour is not just a competitive showcase, but a platform for cultural exchange, education, and lasting impact.
